3.1 Image registration

Registration plays an essential role in the processing and analysis of medical images, particularly brain MRIs. Its importance is justified by the need to be able to relate particular anatomical structures between different images. The context in which the issue of registration arises is not unique. Depending on whether we are interested in registering images from the same subject (intra-individual registration) or from several subjects (inter-individual registration), and/or images of the same nature (monomodal registration) or not (multimodal registration), the methodologies employed may differ considerably.
