7. Using virtual reality
7.1 Neuropathic pain
Doctors at the Erasme Hospital in Brussels have experimented with virtual reality for the treatment of neuropathic pain ("phantom" pain affecting a proportion of patients who have had a limb amputated). A device that tracks the patient's movements in real time enables the missing limb to be virtually reconstructed on a screen, and reparative actions to be carried out. A clinical study showed a significant reduction in pain in a significant proportion of patients using the system.
