3. Endoscopic image registration

The aim of image registration is to find homologous pixels in two or more images.

Homologous pixels correspond to the same three-dimensional point in the scene under observation. In the medical field, a widespread application of image registration is the fusion of data from different modalities (multimodal data are acquired with sensors governed by different physical principles). In endoscopy, the search for homologous points is generally carried out on single-mode data (acquired by the same sensor) in preparation for the image mosaicing stage. Indeed, knowledge of homologous pixels between images in a video sequence is a prerequisite for extending the field of view.
