2. Regulatory complexities surrounding essential oils

Essential oils are derived from manufacturing processes that may differ from one another, and have a complex composition. This explains the difficulty of establishing a regulatory framework specific to these substances or to aromatherapy. No legal definition specific to essential oils exists to date. This lack of a precise legal framework raises a number of issues relating to claims for aromatherapy products, their composition and their use.

2.1 Regulatory context

Different regulations may apply to essential oils. Depending on their claims and use, essential oils may be subject to different regulations. The same is true for finished products containing essential oils, particularly when it comes to communicating the benefits of aromatherapy.
