Chemical families of emollients include esters and vegetable oils, the most common today, silicones, hydrocarbons, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, ethers and carbonates. The first emollients used were derived from animal and vegetable oils and fats. Popular since the 19th century, petro-sourced kerosene and silicone oils are still widely used, but consumers are increasingly turning to products based on natural ingredients.
