4. Batteries for electric vehicles

The battery is the energy source of the electric car. Li-ion technology currently dominates the market, although NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries have been used in hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius. We're going to take a look at this field, which is evolving very rapidly in response to the huge demand from automakers.

4.1 From lead to Li-ion batteries

The rechargeable lead-acid battery was invented in 1859 by the Frenchman Gaston Planté. Its advantage is low cost, but its disadvantage is low stored energy density. It was subsequently perfected by introducing antimony and tin to increase the number of deep-discharge cycles. These technologies can achieve 150 to 300 cycles.
