Special features of river transport

The rules and standards governing the use of LNG as a fuel in maritime transport cannot be directly applied to river transport. Boat engines are different from those used in maritime transport. They range in power from less than 100 kW to over 2.5 MW, and use diesel fuel with a maximum permissible sulfur content of 10 mg/kg (Directive 98/70/EC of October 13, 1998, as amended). The use of LNG as a fuel by river transport has been widely promoted by the "LNG Masterplan Rhine-Main-Danube" project co-financed by the European Union from 2012 to 2015. The rules governing the use of LNG stem from the work of the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR), taken over by the European Union.
