1.1 Definitions and fields
The general definition of transport poses little difficulty. If we define transport by the movement it imparts to products in space, there is nothing to differentiate it from handling. Basically, the analogy is acceptable.
In practice, the difference between transport and handling has been established on the basis of the equipment used (a truck is not a forklift truck) and the infrastructure used (handling hardly ever goes beyond a plant's own premises, whereas transport usually uses a public infrastructure shared by many users).
