6. Mass analyzers

Remember that there are four different technologies for sorting ions from an ion source according to their m/z ratio :

  • magnetic analyzer (B) ;

  • quadrupole analyzer (Q) ;

  • hatches (T), in two variants:

    • "Paul's ion trap" (classic cubic trap or, more recently, linear trap, LTQ),

    • "Penning's ion trap", combined with Fourier Transform analysis (FT/MS)
