4. Basic instrumentation and performance optimization

Commercial SECM systems have become available relatively recently, making it possible to begin expanding the use of this technique in laboratories. However, unlike other local-probe microscopy techniques such as AFM, its routine use is still not widespread.

4.1 Basic equipment

The basic SECM system is fairly simple and consists of four main components:

  • an electrochemical cell, comprising the UME probe, the sample, the reference electrode, and the counter electrode (for simplicity, in some cases, the reference electrode may also serve as the counter electrode);
