5.1 General description
The principle of tandem-mode mass spectrometry or MS-MS is shown in figure 19 . It involves gradually :
select an ion according to its m/z ratio, which is generally present in the ionization source among other charged species;
specifically induce its fragmentation by physical activation processes;
record the mass spectrum of the ions produced when its molecular structure breaks up.
