8. Clutter and micromaclage

A relatively common phenomenon that disrupts structural resolutions is disorder. It can be either static or dynamic.

8.1 Static disorder

It corresponds to the fact that an atom may be distributed on two different crystallographic positions, either with identical probabilities or with different probabilities, e.g. each of the two positions is occupied with a probability of 50%. In this case, the atomic diffusion factor is modulated by a factor representing the probability of occupation of the site in question: αifexp[2πj(hxi+kyi+lzi)]
