6. CAN bus application

6.1 General

CAN has made its mark in vehicles thanks to its flexibility, robustness, reliability, competitive cost and ease of implementation. It considerably reduces wiring and associated costs, and facilitates diagnosis, fault detection and fault location. The CAN bus is found not only in cars, but also in buses, trucks, commercial vehicles and construction machinery ( SAE J1939 ). Its applications also include trains and subways, where communication between carriages is very important.
