2. Physical route

A physical channel (figure 1 ) is a channel on a medium between two terminal stations. In standard terminology, a physical channel connects two data circuit-terminating equipments (DCE), which are the interfaces to the data terminal equipment (DTE).

Data processing terminal equipment (DTE) is the set of devices that enable communication between processing processes, storage systems and data circuit terminal equipment. A DTE is, in most cases, a computer, a PLC, a workstation and now a sensor, an actuator, provided they are obviously fitted with the appropriate communication and data processing devices. DTEs are generally referred to as station, site, machine, host, node.
