5. Standardization for 100 Gbit/s at THz

  • Opening to the IEEE THz communications working group

    The IEEE set up a working group on THz range communications in 2008. Since 2013, the group has focused on radio systems covering 100 Gbit/s, and in 2015-2016 a study of possible frequencies for future systems began with the ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

    Finally, in 2017, the IEEE 802.15.3d-2017 standard was approved for the definition of point-to-point wireless systems in the 252-321 GHz range. The time between the first demonstrations (between 2000 and 2010) and the first standard was therefore very short, in line with the foreseeable...
