8. Driving assistance in Europe and worldwide
R&D on driver assistance systems is very active in all industrialized countries. The methodological approaches are fairly similar: based on accident data, the highest-priority safety situations are identified. System use cases are defined, and driver assistance systems are generally designed to compensate for driver failures in these scenarios.

In Europe, exploratory and pre-competitive research is structured into consortia bringing together public and private partners to respond to calls for tender under the European Commission's framework programs. These programs bring together all European research initiatives under a common roof, in order to reinforce efforts to boost employment, growth and competitiveness in Europe.
