3. The optical device

The optical system consists of elements (lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, etc.) used to project the image of a scene onto the surface of a sensor. This projection is made possible by the use of a lens mounted on the camera. The choice of lens determines image quality.

3.1 The objective

The lens is a set of lenses used to project a real scene onto the plane of the sensor by converging (or diverging) light rays. It has various adjustment elements:

  • focal length: this enables you to see objects of varying sizes. It can be fixed or variable (zoom or vari-focal). Vari-focal lenses are rarely used in machine vision;

  • aperture: by adjusting the diaphragm (or iris), the amount of light reaching...
