The development of hand prostheses is directly linked to the desire to reproduce the dexterity of the human hand, and in particular the characteristic grips produced by the human hand. Human grasping of an object can be divided into two distinct families (figure 18 ). These two families were clearly identified and defined by primatologist and physician John Russell Napier .
