While bio-inspired robots have many applications, they are also the focus of fundamental research aimed at increasing our knowledge of biological systems. On the one hand, they make it possible to test and suggest hypotheses on how these systems function; on the other, they enable highly standardized and reproducible experiments to be carried out, which are sometimes impossible to perform on living organisms for ethical reasons.
