The user's definition of the problem to be solved is the first stage in the process of choosing a measuring instrument, a stage in which he needs to know the process, its environment and the purpose of the measurement. The following paragraphs are intended to deal exhaustively with all the types of questions that the user will have to ask; but depending on the particular problem, some paragraphs may be irrelevant, while others may need to be developed.
