6. Conclusion

Gas sensors have been the subject of intense research for many years. Among the various types of sensor being considered, semiconductor-based sensors are of particular interest, as they offer highly attractive characteristics (high sensitivity, low cost, small size). In this context, sensors based on metal oxides offer considerable potential, and are becoming increasingly important in the gas sensor market, but especially in the low-cost market, i.e. for high-volume applications where accuracy requirements are less stringent (home sensors, automotive), but where low sensor cost is essential.

In the future, however, research into this type of sensor will make it possible to further improve their performance (sensitivity, detection threshold, selectivity), and thus gain access to the market for metrological systems which require the use of much more expensive sensors,...
