1. Context: two types of application for surface temperature measurements

This section presents the current state of surface temperature measurement, as well as a number of applications. The two types of use for these sensors are outlined: direct and indirect measurements. Before any implementation, it is important for the user to know what the final use of the measurement results will be. This is an important point, as it can be a source of misunderstanding, with, among other things, different implementations and objectives.

Surface temperature measurement is used to guarantee product shaping, monitor manufacturing processes, and ensure safe contact with casings (to avoid burns). Material shaping industries (food, plastics, rubber) need to control the surface temperature of mixers, extruders, molds, etc. to optimize their production.
