5. Optical digital sensors

Displacement can be measured either absolutely or incrementally. Absolute encoding provides information on both relative displacement and position, while incremental encoding provides information on relative displacement only. In this case, position information requires the encoder to be initialized with respect to a reference position.

5.1 Absolute optical encoders

The absolute encoder provides absolute position information, with displacement measured as a position variation. The direction of displacement is directly determined by the sign of the position variation.
