1.1.1 Needs and motivations

Apart from the difficulties involved in interpreting signals and extracting useful quantities, passive measurements have the advantage of being simple to implement. In some cases, however, difficulties arise due to low gamma energy and/or low intensity of spontaneous photon and/or neutron emission, parasitic interference, and the virtual absence of spontaneous emission, making it difficult or even impossible to exploit the useful signal.
