Spatial hearing
Spatial hearing refers to the set of spatial attributes of auditory perception, i.e. the auditory attributes (and phenomena) that provide access to knowledge of the space surrounding an individual. In other words, spatial hearing refers to the ability to perceive sound events in the three-dimensional space in which we live.
From an evolutionary point of view, this ability was necessary for survival (acoustic detection of danger or localization of prey); today, this faculty is exploited to detect the origin of sound events in critical situations (e.g. road traffic), to orientate in reverberant spaces or to separate several competing sound sources to improve communication between individuals.
