1.1 Definition of exposure
Exposure to transport noise can be defined as the noise dose received by an individual over a given period of time (exposure time). Depending on the length of the period under consideration, exposure may be instantaneous (due to an isolated noise event), short-term (day) or long-term (year).
For residents or people living near transport infrastructures, this exposure is generally measured by a sound level meter or calculated by software, with reference to the façade of their home. This exposure does not therefore correspond to the sum of the noises to which the individual is exposed in the various places he or she frequents in the course of a day (home, means of transport, workplace, leisure...
