3. Expertise issues

The various emblematic cases we have just considered paint a composite landscape in which it is not certain that engineers and managers can easily find their bearings. After all, between zealously executing expert diagnoses and contesting these diagnoses on the basis of similar professional knowledge, via cooperation with the various protagonists, the tensions only seem to concern prerogatives. It is rarely the expert's core business that is called into question, but rather the intervention algorithm.

A more radical hypothesis, however, would take the form of a question: in what way might the engineer's professional experience enable him to bring together other elements (other tools, other knowledge) and constitute a counter-expertise? This line of thought can be modeled on two aspects of the relationship to knowledge:
