2. Deploying the network of connected sensors

2.1 Choosing the LoRaWan solution

Rennes' long-standing research into urban heat islands, combining field measurements, satellite imagery and modelling, has enabled us to quantify the intensity and frequency of the phenomenon. However, these different methods are proving costly and difficult to maintain, limiting the densification of measurement points. Starting in 2019, solutions based on lightweight, unconnected sensors were first tried. However, this simple-to-deploy device had the disadvantage of requiring regular visits to download data from a PC.

In 2020, the partnership between LETG, Rennes Métropole and Wi6Labs and Alkante reached a new milestone with the deployment of a real-time sensor network based on LoRaWan technology. The project was co-funded...
