1.1 Terminology

Whatever its form, satellite communication has two essential components: a space segment and a ground segment.

The space segment consists of the satellite itself, with its radio transceivers and high-gain, wide-band antennas and amplifiers. If the link uses other satellites, the space segment is the link formed by the chain of satellites.
