2. Solubility of gases in liquids

Knowledge of the solubility of a gas in a liquid is essential for contactor selection and sizing. For a given compound, thermodynamic equilibrium conditions are obtained when chemical potentials (and therefore fugacities) are the same in both phases. Starting from simplifying assumptions (perfect vapor phase, ideal liquid phase), equilibrium between phases is described by Henry's law:

x i H i = y i P or y i = x i H i /P ( 1 )
