3. Scenario 3: BLEVE-type explosion

BLEVE (acronym for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) is defined as a violent, explosive vaporization resulting from the rupture of a tank containing a liquid at a temperature significantly higher than its normal boiling point at atmospheric pressure. The phenomenon of tank bursting can be broken down into several successive or simultaneous phases:

  • a chemical reaction of internal combustion ;

  • bursting of the tank with destruction of the wall;

  • emission of projectiles;

  • the propagation of a pressure wave in the environment ;

  • internal heat exchange (conduction with the reservoir wall) and external heat exchange (radiation, convection).
