1.1 Concept definition

The current threats to the polar bear, a victim of global warming, and to the Amazon rainforest, overexploited, are on everyone's mind. However, these phenomena are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to research into biological diversity, which is actually much broader in scope.

In the academic sense of the term, biodiversity is "the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part: this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems".
