A biosorbent is a material of biological origin, or one composed of biological components immobilized on the surface or within a solid support, that has the ability to capture, more or less selectively, certain organic or inorganic chemical species.

The use of biosorbents for separation and analytical preconcentration has been a rapidly expanding field for the past thirty years.
