Cofferdam: batardeau

Temporary water retention device.

Reach: bief

Portion of a river or canal between two falls or locks.

Summit reach: bief de partage

The summit reach of a canal is the reach with the highest water level. It is only found on canals linking two watersheds.

Bollard; bollard

Cylindrical shaft built into the edge of a dock for close mooring of boats.

Cavitation; cavitation

Cavitation is the physical phenomenon of local liquid boiling due to a drop in static pressure. Most often, this low pressure is the result of a local increase in flow velocity.
