2. Acoustic emission: reminders and definitions

Acoustic emission (EA) corresponds, according to the AFNOR standard , to a "phenomenon of elastic energy release in the form of transient elastic waves within a material during dynamic deformation processes". A material subjected to inelastic deformation dissipates energy by creating micro-displacements of material, a fraction of which take the form of elastic waves, if these deformations are carried out abruptly.
