4. Conclusion
The development of a decarbonated hydrogen industry can play a crucial role in the decarbonation of our industry and encourage the deployment of renewable electricity generation. Decarbonized hydrogen also represents a major challenge in decarbonizing the transport sector, which is the main contributor to France's GHG emissions, particularly in the heavy transport sector. Hydrogen is converted directly into usable electricity in a fuel cell. Currently, the mature fuel cell technology being marketed on a large scale is the PEMFC. This requires the use of precious metals, in particular to catalyze the electrochemical reactions within it, implying high economic and environmental costs. What's more, proton-conducting membranes are currently formulated from fluorinated polymers, raising a number of environmental and public health issues.
