1. Analysis of a work of art
The main purpose of the scientific study of a work of art is to identify its constituents, their arrangement within the pictorial layers and the final visual appearance. This information is then used by curators, restorers and art historians. Works of art are unique and fragile. Non-destructive, non-contact, portable techniques are needed, providing real-time results if possible. This is where electromagnetic waves come into their own.
