Even if pharmaceuticals remain the field where combinatorial chemistry has had the greatest impact, some very conclusive experiments in other sectors of activity point to a not inconsiderable potential for research into other types of compound.
Combinatorial chemical libraries can be generated by biological means. Enzymes or microbes are used to synthesize libraries, taking advantage of the chemical selectivity of biological processes. Diverse or focused natural product libraries have been generated using bacteria. Manipulated genes are transferred into microorganisms in such a way that each entity receives a distinct set of genetic instructions. The bacteria proliferate and express the genes, producing libraries of original natural products.
