INTRODUCTION
In France today, interlocking clay roof tiles are by far the most widely used. In 2014, more than 57 million m 2 of flat interlocking clay roofing tiles were installed in the new-build and renovation markets.
The first interlocking tiles were manufactured in Altkirch in 1841 by Xavier Gilardoni, "who had no idea that by fitting two tiles side by side instead of side by side, and by giving them sufficient regularity to penetrate each other, he was preparing a whole revolution" (cf. Dictionnaire biographique et historique illustré, 1907).
