Lime, definition and history

To talk about lime, we first need to talk about the raw material: limestone.

Limestones are sedimentary rocks that are very abundant in the superficial constitution of our earth's crust. They are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO ₃ ) and, to a lesser extent, magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO ₃ ) ₂ ). When these rocks include a non-negligible proportion of clays, terminologies such as "calcareous marl" or "argillaceous limestone" are used.
