Limestone roofing is found in many parts of the world, and its use dates back to ancient times. The earliest examples are, of course, the megaliths of the Neolithic period. It can be found in Yugoslavia, Greece, the Middle East, southern Italy, Switzerland and Ireland. Limestone lauze has been used in many regions of France, particularly in Burgundy, Allier, Cher, Poitou, Saintonge, Périgord and, more generally, in all areas where thin slabs of stone are available. In the south of France, many churches are covered with canal tiles and a limestone lava chevet. It's not uncommon to find buildings covered in flat tiles with the first eaves in limestone lava. At present, the main regions concerned are considered to be Burgundy and Périgord. Each region has its own particular laying method.
