Solidification involves mixing a binder and water with the polluted soil to create a hard, low-permeability material that is stable over time, trapping the pollutant.
Stabilization consists in reducing the mobility of a pollutant in the soil (figure
27
). With these two techniques, the pollutants are not destroyed, but the risks to the environment are reduced. These techniques are often used on non-biodegradable pollutants (certain organic pollutants or heavy metals).
Solidification and stabilization often require post-treatment containment, but are still widely used, especially for metals.
