6. Energy Efficiency of PON Networks

Telecommunications networks account for 1.6% of greenhouse gas emissions. The information and communication technology (ICT) sector accounts for 3 to 4% of global carbon emissions and consumes between 5 and 9% of electricity. By 2030, the ICT sector’s electricity consumption could reach 10–20% due to the growth of data centers and network upgrades. The migration of the access network from an all-copper network to an optical network reduces electricity consumption through the consolidation of equipment and the use of modules that consume less energy. However, the number of connected devices in customers’ homes is increasing.
