The choices made by EDF with regard to nuclear units, as presented above, were :

• to favour manual over automatic driving;

• seek human redundancy in the organization of operating teams to detect and correct malfunctions;

• encourage the presence of operators who are not physics specialists, but who are trained to apply procedures that cover a wide range of possible incidents and accidents.

These basic principles led to the definition of a driving team organization per pair of units comprising, in normal periods :
