6. What resources are available to industrial and regulatory toxicologists?
A critical first step is to gather all available information on a substance, and any relevant information that may clarify the substance's properties.
Toxicological data on chemical substances are mostly produced by individual producers of these substances, or by the collection of data within an association (ECETOC) or consortium of producers.

Safety data sheets may not be sufficiently explicit, or may only reflect the studies carried out by one manufacturer with his particular substance.
