ABSTRACT

Oxidation-reduction techniques are used in almost every field of water treatment, from drinking water preparation to water for industrial use or the purification of urban and industrial effluents. A large number of oxidants are used. This article starts by presenting the ozone, the most powerful of them, as well as other less traditional oxidants, such as potassium permanganate and bromine. Following, so-called "advanced" oxidation processes are dealt with which allow for achieving a high oxidation yield for pollutants that are difficult to oxidize.

 INTRODUCTION

Oxidation-reduction phenomena are involved in all areas of water treatment technology. Their general principles were outlined in a first article (Oxidation and reduction applied to water treatment – General principles). A second article (Oxidation and reduction applied to water treatment – Oxygen, chlorine and derivatives) was devoted to the most traditional oxidants.

This article examines :

  • other oxidants (including ozone);

  • advanced" oxidation processes, combining ozone and/or hydrogen peroxide and/or UV rays and/or catalysts... ;

  • reducers, commonly used but more limited than oxidizers.

The main applications and implementation methods of oxidation-reduction in water technologies will be developed in a final article in conjunction with the articles in the Environment section:
