6. Assess the initial criticality of potential failures
Criticality is assessed on the basis of three criteria: severity, likelihood and detectability. These criteria are rated, often from 1 to 10 (but another rating can be chosen), and have only a relative value. It's useful for the group to use benchmarks to obtain a consistent rating. Here, by way of example, we propose some benchmarks for a rating from 1 to 10.
6.1 Severity of effects
It represents the level of consequences of the failure. Example of a rating:
1 - 2: very low; easily and inexpensively repaired;
3 - 4: limited to the product; effect quickly repairable at a lower cost than the product;
5 - 6: extended to effects linked to product...
