As noted earlier, ALD has been applied to all PV technologies, often for similar functions and reasons, but at varying degrees of maturity. It is important to note here that in a solar cell, each material used must meet certain criteria in terms of properties and constraints related to manufacturing conditions. Various materials, including oxides, oxysulfides, sulfides, and organic/inorganic hybrids such as metalcones, have been developed for a variety of functions: charge transport layer (CTL), passivation, encapsulation, barrier, or absorber.
