Before describing the principles and techniques of stereoscopic 3D imaging, it's important to define the vocabulary used. The latter is somewhat ambiguous.

• 3D

  This term was first used to refer to computer-generated images, i.e. images resulting from a calculation rather than a real shot. The term CGI stands for Computer Generated Image.

  In computer graphics, three-dimensional virtual objects xyz have been modeled. An image of these objects can be computed by defining the characteristics and placement of a camera and virtual light sources. The resulting image is not "3D" but "3D" (figure
