The basic unit of a fibrous structure is the fiber or filament. The distinction is based on the length of the unit. The term “filament” refers to a linear element of very great length. These are essentially objects produced by spinning petroleum-based polymers. The term “fiber,” on the other hand, is used to refer to objects whose length does not exceed a few centimeters or tens of centimeters.
